In the Company of Perverts

We used to joke that Brookville, Ohio was the home of the four-way stop but apparently it’s becoming the home of the pedophile.

As with any city or town across the United States, there are times that stories break about sexual offenders and child molesters but these last few weeks the boiling point has been reached and the stories have bubbled over.

September 2nd, 2010, Adam D. Hardy, a former assistant band director at Brookville High School was indicted on one count of sexual battery for having an 18 month relationship with a 16 year old girl.

September 3rd, 2010, 81 year old Samuel Moody was indicted on two counts of gross sexual imposition of a child under 13.

And also on September 3rd, 61 year old Michael Windham is currently being charged with 5 counts of felony illegal use of a minor in nudity oriented material while they build future charges against him of having sexual contact with at least two boys over a five year period — since they were age 13.  This story is continually breaking with more grotesque material as it is revealed that there were numerous sex acts with these boys at his house, at a cabin he owns and at a church where he was a prominent leader and that he paid them, took pictures and showed them pornography, including home movies of him and his wife having sex. And he is also co-owner of K’s Restaurant, a popular Brookville eatery.

If I wanted to widen the circle by only a few miles and include such areas as West Alexandria, New Lebanon and Lewisberg we would have an exponential growth of accused, indicted, arrested and convicted persons.

It’s disturbing and raw and a very cruel reality that there are sick sick people out there and we need to increase our efforts in protecting our children and the importance of communicating with our children.

I really think you have no business writing anything about any of these people. You have no idea what really happened. The news does nothing but lie and exaggerate on the truth and in my opinion, only stupid and gullible people believe everything that is said. You have no idea what these families of these people are going through and for you to write this is only making things harder on them.

Being a resident of Brookville and the father of five children I believe I have a heavily invested interest in what happens in my neighborhood.

As for the news ‘lying and exaggerating’ it is easy enough to look up the actual legal details of this case and see the formal charges and indictments against them. This is not mere hearsay and bonds of $1 million are not handed out by judges lightly.

And some of the truth might actually come out if it comes to trial but the sad truth is that so many people plea bargain themselves out of a trial and the whole story remains buried leaving the victims and the families with many unanswered questions.

Regardless, I think you putting something like this is rude towards the whole community, especially the “perverts” families. Think about how they feel if they were to read this. But then again, thats the world we live in. People don’t think about anyone but themselves and don’t think about people’s feelings before they say stuff.

It is a shame that tax payers have to foot the bill to harass, shame, and register those accused of or convicted of sex offenses. Personally, I don’t want to know the details and past histories of all of my neighbors – any more than I want to know if the guy across the street from me cheats on his wife. As for the sex offenders, I don’t want them harassed, living under bridges and unemployed – I want them coming home tired from their job, to a supportive partner/family, and financially stable. My kids are far safer when people are reintegrated into society – not demoralized and forced to live under bridges. This kind of website certainly doesn’t help make our children safer…
